Welcome to Hunger Games week, technically speaking last week eliminated the first couple teams - but this week will determine a lot when it comes the playoff race. If you are unfamiliar with Hunger Games, go watch the movie. I would say you could read the book - but reading is overrated and the movies aren't that bad. Honestly, I just like the concept of throwing kids in a battle arena and watching them fight to the death. It is a pretty messed up and the crazy part about it - our society is not that far from having something similar to that taking place. I mean we do have UFC fights, battle royals in WWE, and the ever classic "World Star" knockout posts on social media. We, as a culture, love watching people fight.
I personally think it goes a little further than that - at least it does for me. I am more curious as how people react to getting punched. I have always been intrigued by the idea of fight or flight. Mike Tyson once said, "Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth." The same can be said for fantasy football. How do you handle injuries? Bye weeks? Big losses? Close match-ups? Sometimes you can guess based upon a person's personality what they might try and do. Sometimes you might be surprised by the response and then you have to decide how you are going to handle their response. "Fight or Flight" will have huge repercussions in the playoff push, let's see where it all stands now....
1. Wings of Dickarus - Ankle Holster, Massive TD's, The Back Hatch
The interesting part about Wings, they have already clinched a playoff spot and could easily just sit back and enjoy the winding weeks of the regular season. Or they could make things really tough on the next three opponents - all of whom are fighting for a playoff spot. Wings could also lock up the regular season championship with win this week and few other teams losing. It will be interesting to watch the final weeks play-out, but either way Wings will be in the playoffs.
2. PEN15 Wrinkle - FSSV, ...And Your Johnson, The J-Bones
The crazy part about Wrinkle being ranked 2nd - if things go completely wrong for him, he could easily be sitting on the edge of the playoffs. That is how close things are at the top, however he does have a one game lead in his division and the winner of each division takes the top two spots. He has a friendly schedule remaining with two teams that likely will not be seeing extra action left - it is all but written in pen.
3. Aaron Rodgers Blows Llamas - Hernandez Hit Men, Hoosier Daddy, Ankle Holster
ARBL is looking pretty good for the playoffs; however there are four other teams all within one game of him or tied. The other tough part - he can not move up to the 2nd seed, because that will go to the winner of the other division. ARBL is essentially trying to fend off suitors for the 3rd seed, while also attempting to make the road tough for three teams fighting for life. HHM, Hoosier Daddy, and Ankle Holster represent 7, 9, and 10. They all stand a fighting chance for a playoff spot and will be looking to take down anyone in their way.
4. Dixie Normous - Bluffton Backup Backups, The Back Hatch, Hoosier Daddy
If anybody had a chance to try and overtake the top seed in the league, Dixie Normous has the most favorable schedule to do it. The next two weeks favor Dixie with matchups against teams from the bottom four. Is Dixie can win the next two weeks and Wings slips up, the final week will be very interesting in terms seeding.
5. FSSV - PEN15 Wrinkle, Ankle Holster, Bluffton Backup Backups
FSSV essentially needs one win to lock-up a playoff spot, 7 wins should get him in with the amount of points he has scored this season. That one win may come in the last week, which would make things very interesting and a little too close for comfort for FSSV. Wrinkle and Holster are both teams that have the talent to keep up with the explosive scoring that the only two-time belt winner of the league has showcased. Triple B should be an easy win, but there is never a for sure thing in fantasy football.
6. Biggus Dickus - Massive TD's, Bluffton Backup Backups, Hernandez Hit Men
Biggus is also in the same boat of needing one win and the tie-breaker will be in his favor (most of the time). Massive TD's has looked like the hottest team in the league as of the past two weeks and that does not bode well for Biggus - luckily he has Triple B in the second to last week. HHM may be in a position to make the playoffs come the final week - from here down, it could be anyone's game!
7. Hoosier Daddy - ...And Your Johnson, ARBL, Dixie Normous
Sitting just inside the playoff boundary and facing a fairly difficult schedule to end the season; Hoosier Daddy will definitely have to earn the spot if he wants it. Johnson put up a lot of points in the season ending loss and will be fighting for pride from here on out. However, after that - the final two weeks will both be against teams that more than likely will be playing in extra weeks. They may want to try and make the road tougher for Hoosier Daddy, so as not to see him in the playoffs.
8. Massive TD's - Biggus Dickus, Wings of Dickarus, ...And Your Johnson
Currently the hottest team in the league and one looking to make a serious run to end the season. A streak of wins would definitely lock things up, and if he can get at least one this week it may add a little breathing for him; the two teams that pose the biggest threat the final playoff spot face teams that sit in the top 3 of the league.
9. Ankle Holster - Wings of Dickarus, FSSV, ARBL
Ankle Holster has far and away the toughest schedule to end the regular season. All three teams left to be played are inside the playoff cut-off and also sit 1, 3, and 5. It will be a difficult run for Ankle Holster, but if he can make it - he may not only make the playoffs, he may pocket an extra bill or two thanks to a side bet.
10. Hernandez Hit Men - ARBL, The J-Bones, Biggus Dickus
Life is good when you are holding onto the belt for the highest points in the week. However, life isn't quite as good when you are sitting at spot number 10 and only 8 teams make the playoffs. Destiny is not in HHM's hands - who will need at least two wins and some luck to make it - but this essentially the final team with a legit shot to make the playoffs.
11. The Back Hatch - The J-Bones, Dixie Normous, Wings of Dickarus
Hoyer over Mayfield.... really??
12. The J-Bones, ...And Your Johnson, Bluffton Backup Backups
These three represent our "Fight or Flight" teams. All three are eliminated from the playoffs and all three teams are no longer allowed to make trades. Obviously we encourage the fight instincts to take over and knock some of these teams out of the playoffs!
On to the matchups....
Matchup of the Week
Ankle Holster* (5-5) v Wings of Dickarus* (8-2)
For those of you living under a rock, the mystery guest is Ankle Holster and the sensei (me) is Wings of Dickarus. Everyone had to know that this was going to be the matchup of the week - especially with so much on the line. Wings could lock-up the number seed with a win and few other teams losing and Ankle Holster could continue to stay alive in the playoff race. It does look like keeping Brees and not be able to ship him out is going to pay off this week, not too mention we also have the matchup Hopkins v Cook, which was a blockbuster trade earlier in the season. My money is on Cook and of course...
Prediction: Wings of Dickarus wins
Mystery Guest: Ankle Holster wins
Bluffton Backup Backups (2-8) v Dixie Normous (7-3)
This matchups gets a lot closer with Jones and Engram on the bye, and may even in fact swing the pendulum in the other direction. Elliott and Gordon both have friendly lineups and I do believe we are going to finally see what could have really come from this lineup - it is just 10 weeks too late. There are friend matchups all over this roster and without the stack from the NY Giants, clinching a playoff berth will have to wait another week for Dixie Normous.
Prediction: Bluffton Backup Backups wins, belt winner
Mystery Guest: Dixie Normous wins
PEN15 Wrinkle* (6-4) v Florida State Seminal Vesicle** (6-4)
This battle will say a lot about the playoffs and who is sitting pretty and who has some definite work to do. If PEN15 wins, they will stay in the top of their division and continue to hold down the 2nd seed in the league. However, you never like seeing Run CMC on the other side of the matchup board. If Moore can have another big week, and Brady can continue to be Brady - this matchup should never be in doubt for FSSV. The only question is whether or not he could secure his third week with the belt.
Prediction: Florida State Seminal Vesicle wins
Mystery Guest: Florida State Seminal Vesicle wins
Biggus Dickus* (6-4) v Massive TD's* (5-5)
What a terrific matchup to have a huge impact on the playoff race. Both of these teams have aspirations to make it to the playoffs - both sit right on the edge. Massive has been the direct benefit of a trade during "Trade Week" and Jacobs and Andrews have been amazing all season long. On the flip side, Biggus has a slew of pass catchers that have carried their lineup. Edelman/Kupp/Henry have performed extremely well - not too mention that for most of the season Hooper was available at TE. This week Biggus also has the benefit of having the Bills defense play Miami - which is obviously in their favor, and that might be the tipping point....
Prediction: Biggus Dickus wins
Mystery Guest: Biggus Dickus wins
Hoosier Daddy* (5-5) v ...And Your Johnson (2-8)
Fight or flight. Fight or flight. Fight or flight. Even if Johnson chooses fight, it is going to take a few big performances to take down the most talented team on paper. Mahomes and Kelce could connect a few times this week and make this a really interesting matchup. On the flip side, Hoosier Daddy has OBJ/Landry/Chubb/Browns defense all going this week in a Thursday divisional matchup with the Steelers. After that all eyes will be on Lamar Jackson to see what highlight move he pulls off this week. Will it be enough? More than likely....
Prediction: Hoosier Daddy wins
Mystery Guest: Hoosier Daddy wins, belt winner
Hernandez Hit Men* (4-6) v Aaron Rodgers Blows Llamas* (7-3)
Hernandez Hit Men is the current belt holder and also needing to keep the streak alive. It doesn't help that Murray and Drake are facing one of the top defenses in the NFL. However, having M. Thomas matchup against Tampa Bay's defense is a benefit, a very big benefit. Will it be enough to overcome ARBL? More than likely, the addition of Bell gives HHM a solid lineup top to bottom, which also makes this team scary if they can find a way to sneak into the playoffs.
Prediction: Hernandez Hit Men wins
Mystery Guest: Hernandez Hit Men wins
The Back Hatch (4-6) v The J-Bones (3-7)
When you have a battle between two teams that are pretty much out of the race, you just hope the boys aren't afraid to throw a little side action on the matchup to make things interesting. Although things aren't looking good for The Back Hatch - they at least have Mayfield in the starting lineup over Hoyer. Evans is the absolute stud in The Back Hatch's lineup and will need to single handedly carry this team over the top. On the flip side, The J-Bones have the better of the two San Fran running backs to couple with Kamara, who has yet to really take off this season. Both these teams could struggle to break 100 points, but it should be a close battle.
Prediction: The J-Bones wins
Mystery Guest: The Back Hatch wins
