In case you missed it, yesterday Cam Newton laughed at a female reporter when she asked a question to him about a teammate running routes. He said he was laughing because it was "funny to hear a female" ask about routes. Given, he could have easily not said anything about the female asking the question and he would have been fine. He could have just answered the question and gone back to his buddies and then made a joke or something like that.
Truthfully, I think that the bigger issue is not what Newton said or did - the bigger issue is that we have incredibly sensitive people in this world. Sorry, Jourdan Rodrigue, you are too sensitive. If I were to ask Newton a question and he laughed in my face I would take it for what it is - he thinks it is funny that a scrawny, 180 pound, soccer playing geek asked him a question. Am I offended by that? No, absolutely not. Now, I would be upset if he chose to then not answer my question - but he answered the question, so who cares??
It is becoming more and more prominent in today's society that people in general are too sensitive about everything. When did that happen?
I am currently a high school teacher and I tell my students that I probably say one thing a day that they could sue me over. Honestly, that is a scary thought. I am not even a mean teacher, students like me (for the most part). However, in today's society anybody can sue anybody based upon any random interaction and probably win. Ridiculous.
Just the other day I was talking with a colleague and he was telling me about how he was talking about facts and someone said he was being racist. He had mentioned that the high school drop-out rate was a specific percentage (I don't remember the exact percent) higher with African American, Latino, etc. than with Caucasians. A student looked up and said, "That is racist."
My colleague then proceeded to explain to him that facts can not be racist. Fact is defined as "something that indisputably the case." Therefore, it impossible to be racist. If I told you that 37% of male inmates are African American - am I being racist? No, fact is fact.
Are there racist people out there? Yes, 100% those people exist. However, it doesn't mean that everything that is said is racist. I am sorry, but is simply not the case.
I am about to be a little sexist...
Okay, I am done with that - who wants to move on to something funny? How about women sports?
I was flipping through the channels the last night and manage to stop on the WNBA Finals. It just blows my mind that people actually paid for a ticket to watch this. It is very clear that not many people are watching it on television. Game 1 was the most watched game in the history of the WNBA and it peaked at 693,000 viewers. In comparison, the NBA Finals game 1 was watched by more than 13 millions viewers. Lets try to find something comparable....
WNBA Game 1 Finals - 693,000 viewers
Limitless (show) - 10.3 million (average) - cancelled after one season
NIT Final Game - 1,022,000 viewers - still not low enough
High School Basketball (Monteverde v Oak Hill) - 690,000 viewers
So, for all you sports watchers. In order to get comparable basketball on television you could watch high school basketball or the WNBA Finals. Unbelievable. I can not believe that they cancelled Limitless. That was a decent show; I mean they had 10.3 million viewers. The things their main character could do onc...........
Oh, sorry I got so bored with even writing about the WNBA that I lost my train of thought. Okay, I am back....
It is just a different game. Nobody wants to watch fundamentally sound players pass the ball and hit killer layups. In fact (here it comes), I am fairly positive that if you give me a year of training I could star in the WNBA. Yes, I have never played organized basketball past YMCA ball. However, I am 6' 4" and fairly athletic. I am already able to reach/jump higher than nearly every woman in the WNBA. If I just trained a little bit on the my fundamentals I could easily star in the WNBA. In fact, we have this argument all the time amongst my friends. Surprisingly, some people take my side. I have asked basketball coaches - some of them think I don't even need a year of training.
Our bodies are just different. Men's bodies are made to be more physical and demanding in that nature. That is science.
So, all in all, should Cam have laughed in the female reporters face? No, probably not. Is she too sensitive about what happened? Yes, most definitely. Could I star in the WNBA? No, probably not. Is it fun to argue about it? Yes, obviously. However, I do leave you with this video.....
